Alcohol is Dangerous!
Some time ago, major News Networks reported on the use of alcohol among senior citizens. The focus was on the devastating effects of that unholy beverage. Sclerosis of the liver, destruction of brain cells, abdominal and intestinal disorders, nervous disturbances, and a host of other maladies come from even moderate consumption of alcoholic drinks. Senior citizens still legally drive automobiles and at the best are not’ generally good drivers. Advanced years usually means decreased reaction time. Judgment gets a little worse with age. Let a senior citizen down a few drinks of liquor and he is even more dangerous. Highway slaughter is directly related to drunk drivers.
So why do people continue consuming liquor? Why is social drinking considered respectable, fashionable, and appropriate conduct? Why is the teetotaler generally considered to be a radical religious nut? Why is prohibition anachronistic? If the consumption of alcohol is dangerous, why is it legally allowed to be the multi-billion dollar business it is? Good questions, right?
Under the death penalty, the Mosaic law forbad the use of alcohol in Tabernacle service (Lev. 10:9). Manoah, mother of Samson, was restricted from wine and strong drink during her pregnancy (Judges 13:4). The wise man said, “Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise” (Prov. 20:1, NIV). Agur added, “It is not for kings, 0 Lemuel-- not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer, lest they drink and forget what the law decrees, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights” (Prov. 31:4-5, NIV).
If intoxication is unacceptable in service to God, endangers the incubation of an unborn baby, and impairs the judgment of those who govern us, a concern for the common good would banish it from the earth. Remember the “Ban the Bomb” movement? No atomic bomb, has the kill ratio of alcohol. Nothing has killed more than this blight. Yet it is still manufactured, sold, and taxed, -- and consumed.
“But I drink very moderately,” many claim. Then you are “moderately” under the influence of alcohol. With each drink:
Your judgment is “moderately” impaired.
Your liver is “moderately” under attack.
Your brain cells are “moderately” being destroyed.
Your digestive system is “moderately” being attacked.
Your nervous system is “moderately” being up-set.
Moderate drinking is just a slower way .of coming to the same place you find a guzzler or sot. The moderate drinker just takes a little more time to get there.
Alcohol is a very addictive drug. It is the world’s number one drug problem. The danger it poses is very real.
“And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit” (Eph. 5:18).
