The Taste of Dust

In 1966, about a year before he died, the physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer said, I am a complete failure!” This man had been the director of the Los Alamos Project, the research team that produced the atomic bomb, and had also served as head of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. Yet, in looking back, he saw his achievements as meaningless. When asked about them, he replied, “They leave on the tongue only the taste of ashes.”

Let us each examine our own situation. As Christians, we can live so completely for things of this world that we have neither time nor energy to serve the Lord. Let’s put him first, always seeking to know and to do his will. Then we’ll never look back on our accomplishments with the sad comment, “They leave only the taste of ashes.” - -Herbert Vander Lugt
