Tributes toThe Bible

George Washington: “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.”

William Cowper,

“A Sacred glory gilds the page

Majestic as the sun,

It gives a light to every age,

It gives, but borrows none.”

It is the unfailing “lamp unto my feet,” and the eternal guiding “light to my path” (Psalm 119:105).

Jesus said by the word the world will be judged (John 12:48).

One reads with Father’s specs upon his head

And sees the Book just as his father said

While others read to prove a pre-adopted creed.

Hence understand but little what they read,

For every passage in the book they bend

To make it suite that all-important end.

An Anvil

I passed last eve beside the blacksmith’s door

And heard the anvil ring, the vesper’s chime,

And looking in I saw upon the floor

Old hammers worn with beating years of time.

“How many anvils have you had,” said I,

“To wear and batter all these hammers so?”

“Just one,” said he, and then with twinkling eye,

“The anvil wears the hammers out, you know.”

And so, thought I, the anvil of God’s word,

For ages skeptics’ blows have beat upon,

But though the noise of falling blows was heard

The anvil is unchanged; the hammers gone!
